Dinesh Bana was born on Wednesday, 15 December 2004 (age 17 years; as of 2021) in Dhansu village of Hisar, Haryana. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He has been practising at St. Sophia Sports Academy, Haryana since 2012 under the mentorship and training of coach Ranveer Jakhar. According to his coach, they practise 8-9 hours with the aim of improving his wicket-keeping. Apart from cricket, Dinesh is good at academics as well. He scored 85% marks in the 10th standard and is very good at reading.

Cricket

Dinesh has been good in academics therefore his father wanted him to become an engineer. However, Dinesh had a keen interest in cricket and wanted to pursue it in a more serious way. His father, who is also associated with sports, decided to support his son in his ambition. Dinesh joined St. Sophia Sports Academy, Haryana in 2012 and began practising under his coach Ranveer Jakhar. They practised for 8-9 hours for the sole purpose of improving his wicket-keeping.

He has played Under-16 Vjiay Merchant Trophy. He got selected for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy in 2021. He represented the Haryana team and played with an average of 90. He played 5 innings and set the record of the most fifties by making 3 fifties under his name.He also got selected in the Indian squad for the Under-19 Asia Cup 2021.

He caught the attention of the selectors during the Challenger’s trophy. He played 4 matches in total, in which he scored 255 runs. His best score was that of 170 off just 98 deliveries including 14 sixes and 10 fours. When his friend and colleague Nishant Sindhu told him about the selectors before the match, Nishant replied,

Tu bas six count karna aaj mere”

However, it turned out that Dinesh was never the first choice of the selectors as the team already had Aaradhya Yadav for wicket-keeping.

Dinesh Bana was never the first choice keeper. During the India B vs India F in the Challengers Trophy, his friend Nishant Sindhu told him ‘aaj selectors aane waale hai. Bana replied, “Tu bas six count karna aaj mere.” Bana smashed a 98-ball 170, including 10 fours and 14 sixes.

Under-19 World Cup 2022

In the semi-final against Australia, Dinesh gave a short but spectacular performance in which he batted fiercely with a strike rate of 500. He scored 20 runs in 4 balls which includes 2 sixes and 2 fours and set the record of being the worlds first cricketer to score runs from only boundaries by playing 4 or more balls in any category of men’s or women’s or under-19 cricket.

In the Under-19 World Cup final against England, India was chasing a target of 190 and required 12 runs in 3 overs with 4 wickets remaining. Nishant Sindhu batted a four and then took a run giving the strike to Dinesh Bana. Bana shot a six at fast bowler James Sales ball. He lifted another six on a full toss that followed over long-on, leading India to win the Under-19 World Cup 2022. He remained unbeaten on 13 runs off 5 balls and took 4 catches.

Finishing off the match with a six, especially making the team win the world cup trophy, made fans reminisce the Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s winning six at Wankhede stadium in Worldcup 2011. The official page of ICC on instagram posted a video comparing Dinesh’s six with Dhoni’s six with the caption, ‘Where have we seen this ending before? 🤔 #U19CWC’

Dinesh’s father arranged a big screen in front of his house in sector 14, Hisar for his family and neighbours to watch him play. After the historic win, his family celebrated with firecrackers and distribution of sweets. The next day, Dinesh’s family, neighbours and his academy friends played Holi with Gulal and danced to the beats of dhol.

His father said that he was extremely happy and proud of his son and was sure that his son would continue to bring laurels to the family. His sister Nitika said,

It was an electrifying moment when I saw my brother hitting those two sixes,”

and further added,

I cannot explain the happiness today. I am proud of him,”

After his stint in the Under-19 world cup, he got entry in the Haryana squad for Ranji Trophy, which is the country’s premier senior domestic competition.
