Fawad Afzal Khan was born on Sunday, 29 November 1981 (age 40 years; as of 2022) in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He started his schooling at an American school. He completed A levels from Lahore Grammar School, Johar Town, Pakistan.

At the age of 16, Fawad met his wife Sadaf while he was studying at Lahore Grammar School, Johar Town, Pakistan, and Sadaf was studying in the girl’s wing of the same school. Fawad had a crush on her, but he could not express his feelings to her as he was quite shy. So, he started chatting online with Sadaf, and they soon became good friends. When Fawad was 17 years old, he met with an accident and was hospitalised. When Fawad’s friends visited the hospital they told him that Sadaf was asking about him. Fawad then realised that Sadaf had the same feelings for him as he had for her. After a few days, they met each other and within a few days of their meeting, Fawad proposed to her. She accepted the proposal, and they started dating. After completing their schooling, they took admission to different colleges. Fawad used to wait for Sadaf at the gate of her college every day. He was so consistent in it that once the gatekeeper thought he was a student in Sadaf’s college. After dating for a few years, the couple decided to get married. Initially, Sadaf’s parents rejected their relationship as they were not happy with Fawad’s profession as a singer at that time. When Fawad got to know this, he started doing a 9 to 5 job, and then Sadaf’s parents agreed to their marriage. On 12 November 2005, the couple had a nikah ceremony in Karachi.

Television

At the age of 17, while he was performing in the Urdu adaptation of Spartacus play, a Pakistani TV director spotted him, and after almost two years of noticing him, he offered Fawad a role in a Pakistani sitcom. Fawad accepted the offer and made his TV acting debut in the Pakistani TV sitcom ‘Jutt and Bond’ (2001) in which he played the role of Bond. In an interview, while talking about his debut TV sitcom, he said,

He called me to say that he was directing a sitcom and asked if I’d like to be in it. He told me I would make Rs 3,000 per episode. I quickly did the mental math and realised I would be taking home a cool Rs 12,000 Pakistani rupees. I felt like a king When I did join the industry, I did it with a heavy heart. I used to find TV sub-standard and thought no one watched it. But when my shows received a mad response, I realised I needed to pull my socks up and take this medium seriously.”

He then appeared in a few Pakistani TV dramas like ‘Satrangi’ (2008), ‘Daastan’ (2010), ‘Akbari Asghari’ (2011), and ‘Kuch Pyar Ka Pagalpan’ (2011). Fawad gained immense popularity with the Pakistani TV dramas ‘Humsafar’ (2011) and ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’ (2012).

Music Band

From 1994 to 2000, two music bands which gained immense popularity in Pakistan were ‘Entity’ and ‘Paradigm.’ The Pakistani singer Ahmad Ali Butt was the lead vocalist of Entity band, whereas, Fawad Khan was the lead vocalist of Paradigm band. In 2001, while Ahmad Ali and Fawad were working together in the Pakistani TV sitcom ‘Jutt and Bond,’ the director of the sitcom asked Fawad and Ahmad to make the title track of the show. Both the bands collaborated and recorded the title track of ‘Jutt and Bond’ titled “Hamein Aazma.” In 2002, members of Entity and Paradigm decided to send their track “Hamein Aazma” in the Pakistani TV series ‘Pepsi Battle of the Bands.’ After their song was selected in the audition round of the competition, both the bands participated in the competition with the band name ‘Entity Paradigm.’ The band was placed second in the competition.

On 20 September 2002, the band performed live for the first time at Lahore Grammar School, Gulberg, Pakistan. In 2002, the band signed one year contract with Pepsi. In 2003, Entity Paradigm released its first music album titled ‘Irtiqa.’ Some of the songs released under the album are “Fitrat,” “Kahan Hai Tu,” “Hamein Aazma,” and “Hamesha.”From 2002 to 2007, he worked as a singer under the music label Lips Music, and from 2009 to 2015, he worked as an independent singer. His genres in music are alternative rock, heavy metal, alternative metal, progressive metal, rapcore, and nu-metal. He plays the instruments like guitar and drums. However, on 9 January 2007, the band announced their disbandment, and Fawad continued his acting career after it. On 12 March 2009, Entity Paradigm reunited with some original members including Fawad and some new members. In 2010, the band performed in the third season of Coke Studio, and in the same year, the Entity Paradigm released its first single “Shor Macha.” In 2012, Fawad Khan left the band and continued his acting career. He lent his voice to the official anthem of the Pakistan Super League titled “Khel Deewano Ka” (2019).

Social Work

Fawad has been associated with various social services. In 2015, he attended Islamic Relief USA fundraisers in San Jose and Washington, D.C. to raise funds for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan. He has also raised funds for Pakistani charitable organisations by attending seminars in various nations. In 2015, Fawad, along with his wife Sadaf, attended a tree plantation event at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Peshawar, Pakistan. In an interview, while talking to the reporters, he said,

I have been participating in the fundraising campaigns for Shaukat Khanum Hospital since my childhood. I take great pride in giving back to the community and offer my support for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Peshawar.”

Other Work

Fawad has walked the ramp for many Pakistani fashion designers like Munib Nawaz in 2010, Umar Sayeed in 2012, and for the Republic by Omar Farooq in 2015. In August 2012, Fawad and his wife Sadaf launched a female clothing line ‘Silk by Fawad Khan.’ The debut collection of the clothing line was launched in Lahore, Pakistan. In 2015, he was featured in the Pakistani song “Urain Ge” by Ali Zafar which is a tribute to the victims of the 2014 Peshawar school attack. The song featured many other Pakistani celebrities like Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed, Humaima Malick, Ali Azmat, and Mehreen Raheel.

In January 2016, he worked as the brand ambassador for the Pakistan Super League’s Islamabad United cricket team. He has also appeared in various TV commercials like Zameen.com, Oppo Mobile, and Lux Soap.

Controversy

Negative Comment on Indians

In 2016, there were rumours that post the URI attack, the Indian political party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena urged all the Pakistanis artists to leave India including Fawad Khan. According to some media sources, on reaching Pakistan, Fawad said,

Indian person’s heart is so small.”

Reportedly, Fawad even denied commenting on the Uri attack. The matter heated up when an Indian blogger tweeted,

Soon, the Indian netizens started backlashing Fawad Khan, whereas, the people from Pakistan started sharing negative comments about the blogger. Later, Fawad Khan shared his side of the story through his Facebook account. He wrote,

This is the first time I have spoken on the matter. Please disregard any other words attributed to me during this time because I have not said them. I thank all my fans and fellow artists from Pakistan, India and people in general all over the world who have shown continued support for their belief in love and understanding to unite a divisive world.”

His reply was not taken well by some netizens, and they called Fawad a diplomatic person.

  • During the gulf war in 1990, Fawad’s father worked in various cities like Athens, Dubai, Riyadh, and Manchester during the Gulf War. When he was 13, his family returned to Lahore.
  • Fawad Khan was the head boy in his school. In an interview, he shared that he was often bullied at school. He said,

    I was picked on and I was bullied in school. Now I look at it in a very funny way, I studied in an American school and the idea of brown and white people just didn’t mix too well, I think,” I was kind of bullied that way as well, and also because I was the quiet one in the class. I don’t like confrontation, I avoid it. I hate arguments. I actually don’t know what I was doing in school. I think I daydreamed and slept my way through classes.”

    In my case, I used to smoke in school. We’d hide behind the swimming pool to smoke. There used to be pipes there with raw and unfinished concrete on it. We’d swim, come out, take a puff and go back again. Once, when I was standing against these concrete pipes, I got scratches and cuts. But I jumped back into the swimming pool. The water had not been treated that day. I developed a terrible infection. I lost 10 kilos. That’s when I realised that I was diabetic.”
