Hemant Nagrale is an Indian police officer who replaced Param Bir Singh as the commissioner of police in the midst of the Mukesh Ambani Bomb Scare case. Hemant Nagrale is known for helping and rescuing injured people during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and he also investigated the Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh scam cases.

Hemant Nagrale was born in 1962 (age 59 years; as of 2021) in Bhadrawati, Maharashtra. Hemant studied in a Zila Parishad school till 6th, and thereafter, he moved to Nagpur with his parents where he continued his education at Patwardhan High School, Nagpur. Nagrale graduated from Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering, Nagpur and earned a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. Further, he attended Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai and received his master’s degree in Finance Management.

Hemant got married to Pratima after two years of joining the service in 1989. However, the couple started facing problems in their marriage and Hemant started claiming that his wife is mentally unstable. Later, Pratima filed a complaint against him in a police station and claimed that Hemant had been physically torturing her to get a divorce. In the court hearing, the family court granted permission to the couple to dissolve their marriage, but later, the Bombay High Court dismissed the order passed by the family court and the divorce was cancelled.

Career

Hemant joined the force in 1989 as the Additional Superintendent of Police in the Naxalite affected area of Chandrapur district. He was then posted to Solapur in 1992 where he was successful in controlling the Babri Masjid communal riots. In 1994, Hemant Nagrale got promoted to the position of Superintendent of Police in Ratnagiri district. In 1996, Hemant was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department where he investigated the MPSC paper leak case. Later, Hemant was transferred to CBI in March 1998, and further, he became the D.I.G. (Deputy Inspector General) in CBI, New Delhi. While serving in CBI, New Delhi, Hemant solved many cases like the Madhopura Co-op Bank, Ketan Parekh scam, and Harshad Mehta bank scam. He served as the D.I.G. till 2002 and then he was posted as the Special IGP and director of vigilance and security in Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) from June 2008 to August 2010.

During his tenure as the Special IGP, Hemant managed to revamp the MPKAY Scheme and helped in reducing the expenditure by Rs. 10 crores in 2011-2012. In 2014, Hemant was appointed as the additional commissioner of police in Mumbai. From May 2016 to July 2018, Hemant was posted in Navi Mumbai as the commissioner of police. In October 2018, he was appointed as the DG and he was given the responsibility to look after all the forensic science laboratories in the state.

  • Hemant Nagrale is an avid golfer and a tennis player. Hemant Nagrale has also taken training for self-defence, and he has a black belt in judo.
  • Hemant Nagrale played a key role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks as he was a part of the team that entered Hotel Taj Mahal Palace to rescue the injured and get them to safety. He also worked with his team to bring out the dead from the facility.
  • For his service in the force, Hemant has received several awards like President’s Police Medal, Vishesh Seva Padak, and Antarik Suraksha Padak.

  • The Maharashtra Government transferred Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh from Mumbai, and keeping in mind the circumstances, his transfer was not ceremonious and he decided to leave before addressing Hemant and handing him over the charge.
