He has also served as the incharge of the Jammu & Kashmir Youth Congress and Haryana Youth Congress. As a member of the IYC, Jagdeep Kamboj actively participated in various protests. Kamboj wanted to contest the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from the Jalalabad Assembly Constituency on a ticket from the Indian National Congress, but the party declared Ravneet Singh Bittu as its candidate at that time. When by-poll in the Shahkot Assembly Constituency was necessitated because of the death of Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Ajit Singh Kohar on 4 February 2018, Kamboj actively campaigned for INC.

On 23 September 2019, Kamboj wrote a letter to BV Srinivas (president of IYC) in which he announced his resignation from the post of national secretary of the IYC and the decision to quit the party. Kamboj parted ways with INC protesting the allotment of party ticket of Jalalabad constituency to Raminder Singh Awla, who hailed from Guru Har Sahai Assembly Constituency, instead of him being a native of Jalalabad. Fumed over the matter, Kamboj decided to enter the poll fray as an Independent candidate. On 11 October 2019, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Sunil Jakhar in a letter stated that Kamboj was expelled from Congress for anti-party activities. It stated that Kamboj was contesting the 2019 Jalalabad Assembly by-election against the official Congress candidate, Raminder Singh Awla.
