Jagroop Singh, alias Roopa , is an Indian history-sheeter, who is a close aide of the jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Jagroop is suspected to be one of the eight sharpshooters involved in the Sidhu Moosewala murder case.

Jagroop Singh was born in 1992 (age 30 years; as of 2022) in Jaura village in the Patti area of the Tarn Taran district of Punjab. While in school, Roopa got influenced by the company of his bad friends and started consuming drugs. Soon, he left his studies and briefly worked at a motorcycle agency. Highly addicted to drugs, Jagroop started selling household items to buy them. When his family came to know about his addiction to drugs, they helped him to overcome it. However, Jagroop didn’t stop and started forcing his mother to pay him for drugs. He often snatched money from his mother and when she denied it, he used to beat her and pull her hair. Soon, he started committing crimes like robbery and dacoity. His family was not happy with his growing criminal activities and expelled him from their house in 2017.

Jagroop Singh Roops’s father, Balwinder Singh, is an agriculturist. Earlier, he used to work as a driver, but after the request of his younger son, Balwinder quit his profession and started farming on his two acres of land in the village Jaura. His mother, Palwinder Kaur is a homemaker. He has a younger brother, Ranjot Singh, who is an Indian Army personnel.

Criminal Activities

Roopa got involved in criminal activities like robbery and dacoity while he was in his teens. When his parents threw him out of their house, he left the village and vowed not to come back. In a short time, he got involved in serious crimes like seeking ransom, quarrels, assault, and attempting to murder. According to the police, Roopa is a Category-B gangster, who is having around 17 cases of crime registered against him in cities like Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ferozepur. While he is found guilty in some, the court has also given him relief in a few.

Sidhu Moosewala Murder Case

The Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala was gunned down by some unidentified assailants on the evening of 29 May 2022 in the Jawaharke village, Mansa. Sidhu was travelling in his Thar jeep with his cousin and a friend when the incident took place. Reportedly, his vehicle was intercepted by a white Bolero and a dark grey Scorpio and soon, the shooters inside the cars started firing at Sidhu; he was soon taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. A few hours after Moosewala’s murder, the Indian gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar, and Sachin Bishnoi took the responsibility for Sidhu’s murder through their respective Facebook accounts. In June 2022, the police revealed the names of eight suspected sharpshooters who were involved in the murder of Sidhu. Apparently, he was one of the eight shooters. The other names include Manpreet Singh Mannu, Harkamal alias Ranu from Punjab, Priyavrat Fauji and Manjeet alias Bholu from Haryana, Saurav Mahakal and Santosh Jadhav from Pune, and Subhash Banuda from Rajasthan.

  • During a media conversation, Jagroop’s mother said that she had last seen her son around four years ago. She further said that he used to run away after committing the crime, and later, the police used to harass them (his family). She also said that if her son was involved in the murder of the Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, the Punjab Police should shoot him wherever he is found.
  • In April 2022, the Majitha police had received a tip-off that Jagroop and his associate Gursharanjit used to supply drugs in their black Scorpio and had several illegal weapons. The source told the police that the sharpshooters with their illegal weapons can be found at Jagroop’s house, if the police raided it immediately. Soonon after receiving the tip-off, the police raided his house. Although Jagroop, along with his associate Gursharanjit, managed to escape from the house, the police seized weapons (a pistol with eight bullets and a revolver with 23 live rounds) alleged drug proceeds, Rs 4.92 lakh cash, and an SUV (Scorpio) from his residence. Later, a case under Sections 21-27A-61-85 of the NDPS Act and Sections 25/27/54/59 of the Arms Act was registered against Jagroop and Gursharanjit.
  • After Jagroop’s name popped up in Sidhu Moosewala’s case, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Charan Singh, head of Sarhali police station reached his village to raid his house, however, the main gate of his house was locked at that time. Later when his family was questioned about their absence, Jagroop’s mother told the police that they were not in hiding but had gone to a relative’s place to attend a funeral.
