Career

Kevin de Bruyne started his career as a regular player at Genk. His professional career started with KVV Drongen, his local club, in 1997. In 2005, he joined Gent and relocated to Genk.

He was promoted to the first-team squad in 2008 as a result of his continuing progression in the club’s junior system. It was disclosed in an interview with his youth club that the Belgian was a fan of Liverpool and a fan of Michael Owen.

On 9 May 2009, he made his debut for Genk in a 3–0 loss against Charleroi. He scored his first goal for Genk in a 1–0 victory against Standard Liège on 7 February 2010. As Genk won the Belgian championship for the third time in a row in 2010–11, he tallied five goals and 16 assists in 32 league games. In the 5–4 victory against Club Brugge on 29 October 2011, he scored his first hat-trick for Genk. He scored two goals in a 5–0 victory against OH Leuven on January 28, 2012.

Following his agreed sale to Chelsea, he scored and set up the other goal for Genk in a 1–2 away draw with Mons on 18 February 2012. In a 3–1 win against Gent, he put an exclamation point on his season, putting the finishing touches on his goal total. He scored eight goals in 28 league games throughout the season.
