Shiv Kumar Subramaniam was an Indian actor, playwriter, theatre artist, film and play director, and screenwriter who played the role of Ananya Krish Malhotra’s (played by Alia Bhatt) father in the Hindi film ‘2 States’ (2014). He passed away on 10 April 2022 due to prolonged illness and pancreatic cancer.

On 17 November, he used to celebrate his wedding anniversary with the Indian film actor and theatre artist Divya Jagdale. Together, they had a son named Jahaan Subrahmanyam, who died in February 2022 due to a brain tumour.

Career

He debuted as an actor-screenwriter-assistant director with the Hindi film ‘Parinda’ (1989). He played the role of Francis in the film.

Some of his popular Hindi films as an actor are ‘1942: A Love Story’ (1994), ‘Kaminey’ (2009), ‘Stanley Ka Dabba’ (2011), ‘That Girl in Yellow Boots’ (2010), and ‘Hichki’ (2018).

He worked as a screenwriter in the Hindi films like ‘1942: A Love Story’ (story & screenplay; 1994), ‘Arjun Pandit’ (screenplay; 1999), ‘Chameli’ (screenplay; 2003), and ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ (original story & screenplay; 2005). Shiv played the role of Ishwarlal Motilal Virani in the Hindi TV serial ‘Mukti Bandhan’ (2011) for which he gained immense popularity.

He performed in various Hindi theatre plays, and he also worked as a writer-director in many theatre plays. Shiv was featured in a few TV commercials like OLX, Cadbury Dairy Milk Crispello, and PhonePe.

 

Death

Due to prolonged illness caused by pancreatic cancer, he took his last breath on 10 April 2022. His last rites were performed at Mokshdham Hindu Shamshanbhoomi, Ceasar Rd, Amboli, Andheri West, Mumbai. On his demise, the Pakistani journalist, artist, and filmmaker Beena Sarwar tweeted,

Gutted to hear this news. Incredibly tragic, esp as it happened just two months after the passing of his and Divya’s only child – Jahaan, taken by a brain tumour 2 weeks before his 16th birthday. RIP #ShivkumarSubramaniam”
