Walt Disney started his career as an advertising cartoonist. Disney, then 18, and Iwerks were let off in January 1920 when Pesmen-sales Rubin’s dropped following Christmas. They founded their own company, Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists, which was short-lived. After failing to attract many clients, Disney and Iwerks decided that Disney should temporarily depart to make money at A. V. Cauger’s Kansas City Film Ad Company; the next month, Iwerks joined as well, since he was unable to operate their company alone.
