BTS, the seven-member South Korean boyband that took the world by storm with their music, is not a seven-member band after all. Reportedly, according to Army (BTS’s fandom), there is an eighth member, Yeontan. Yeontan is a male black-and-tan pomeranian and the pet pooch of Kim Tae-hyung, the vocalist of BTS.

Kim Yeontan was born on September 7, 2017 (age 4 years; as of 2021). He is a teacup pomeranian. Kim Tae-hyung adopted him after his birth. Reportedly, when Tae-hyung met Tan, he seemed angry, and Tae-hyung thought that he wanted lots of hugs. He was first introduced to the public on Jin’s birthday V Live, i.e., on December 4, 2017. Kim Tae-hyung only showed a glimpse of Yeontan from behind the glass.

Yeontan’s owner is V, aka Kim Tae-hyung of BTS. Kim Tae-hyung is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and actor.

V always wanted to adopt a dog but was afraid that he wouldn’t be able to take care of one properly. V met many people and an animal trainer named Kang Hyung Wook before adopting a pet dog; Tae-hyung even spent time with many dogs. Kang Hyung Wook said he was impressed by V’s concern and preparations before bringing a pet home. When V was choosing his pet, he came across Yeontan, who stood out among all the other puppies. He made a strong impression on V. V adopted Kim Yeontan despite knowing he had a health condition; he has a narrow respiratory tract.

Due to the busy schedule of BTS, he often has to make travels around the globe. That is why Kim Yeontan lives at V’s parents’ place.

When Yeontan was adopted, he spent a decent amount of time with all the BTS members, which is why he shares a close bond with every BTS members. Tan often appears with BTS members on social media platforms. Out of all the BTS members, he is most frequently seen with Park Ji-min. He likes sitting in Jung-kook’s arms.

  • His nicknames are Tan and Tannie.
  • His name Yeontan is derived from the Korean word ‘Yeontan,’ which means ‘coal briquettes.’ According to V, he kept his pet’s name Yeontan because he’s as black as coal, and his eyebrows are his key feature.
  • In December 2020, a pet food company named Goldrony was bashed by Army’s for feeding while filming Yeontan and uploading the video on YouTube for alleged promotional purposes. In the video, a female hand can be seen feeding Yeontan. Reportedly, Yeontan had come to a veterinarian when a person from Goldrony approached him and decided to offer him pet food. The company was not only accused of filming and feeding Yeontan but also promoting their brand without permission from V.
  • Yeontan is suffering from a health condition. According to V, Yeontan’s air pipe is small, due to which he has difficulty breathing. Even running for a short time makes him lose his consciousness. In 2021, he underwent two surgeries, and both failed; currently, he is surviving on his medicines. While talking about Tannie in an interview, he said he was thankful towards Tan for going through so much and being alive. He added,

    Thank you for putting up with the pain, not giving up, and staying alive, even though it must have been so hard for you. I hope we can create a lifetime of happy memories together. I want to see you all grown up.”

    After Army (BTS fandom) came to know of Tan’s health condition, they extended their love toward both and wished for Tan’s speedy recovery.

  • In an interview with GQ Magazine, Tae-hyung revealed that Tan was very stubborn as he was not eating his food; he just liked eating snacks.
  • In Yeontan’s birthdays, various social media platforms trends with hastags ‘HappyBirthdayYeontan’ or ‘nYearsWithYeontan’ (n being number of birthday), followed by charity projects and donations to animals by Army’s worldwide. In 2021, when Yeontan turned four, Army’s celebrated his birthday by trending many hashtags; #4YearsWithYeontan trended number 1 worldwide. Like every other year, many fans did charity projects and donated to animals charities.
  • Kim Tae-hyung once compared Yeontan to the Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat.
  • In February 2021, BTS released BE Essential Edition. As a promotional activity, all BTS members created individual voice notes. Big Hit Music released Tae-hyung’s note along with a video, which featured Tae-hyung singing the starting verses of the song ‘Blue & Grey.’ In the video, he was seen with Yeontan, who was modeling by Tae-hyung’s side. After the video, Yeontan and Tae-hyung trended on top in different countries on Twitter.

  • In November 2021, BTS was filming Butter for Good Morning America in a video made while BTS was playing with a teacup pomeranian. In the video, V played most with the dog. He discussed that the dog was different from Yeontan. Tan has gained weight, and he is a Godzilla.
  • In December 2021, V uploaded a picture of Yeontan on his personal Instagram account. Yeontan broke the record of his owner by getting 10 million likes on his photo in 6 hours and 10 minutes; Tae-hyung earlier ranked first in the photo popularity with his record being 6 hours and 19 minutes.
