Nitin Gadkari is a prominent Indian politician. He is from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Nitin Gadkari is serving as the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the Narendra Modi Government.


Nitin Gadkari was born on 27 May 1957 (age 62 years; as in 2019) in Nagpur, Bombay State (now Maharashtra). His zodiac sign is Gemini. His full name is Nitin Jairam Gadkari. He did his schooling from a local school of Nagpur. He pursued his LL.B. and M.Com from the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He has a sister, Manisha Kishor Totade, who is married. He is married to Kanchan Gadkari, a social worker. They have a daughter, Ketki Gadkari (Youngest), and 2 sons, Nikhil Gadkari (Eldest) and Sarang Gadkari. All of them are married.

Political Career

Nitin Gadkari was interested in politics from a very young age. He had joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1976. He had actively participated in the university student elections which resulted in ABVP winning all the seats of the Nagpur University student body. In 1981, Gadkari had organised the 28th National Convention of ABVP, where he was selected as the President of the Nagpur Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). He got elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Graduates’ Constituency in 1990. He was appointed as the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister in 1995 in the Maharashtra government. He held his position as the MLC for 4 consecutive terms from 1990 to 2008. He became the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1996.

He was appointed as the President of the Maharashtra BJP in 2004. In December 2009, Gadkari was made the BJP National President. He held this position till January 2013; when Rajnath Singh was appointed as the National President of the BJP. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Nagpur Constituency and won. He was inducted as the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highway in the Narendra Modi government.

Gadkari was given the additional charge of the Ministry of Shipping and Water Resources, and River Development and the Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry in September 2017 after the death of Union Minister Gopinath Munde. In 2019, he contested the General Elections again from the Nagpur Lok Sabha Constituency and won. He defeated his opponent Congress’ Nana Patole with a margin of over 2 Lakh votes. On 31 May 2019, he was inducted as the Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways, & Shipping and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

  • In November 2011, the body of a young girl was found inside Gadkari’s car. When investigated, it was revealed that it was the daughter of his house cleaner. The girl’s family claimed that she was assaulted and murdered; as there were 19 injury marks on her body. The doctors said she died due to suffocation as she could not get out of the car and the marks on her body were not of assault. The girl’s family accused Gadkari of using his position to influence doctors and the police as no action was taken against Gadkari.
  • In 2012, Gadkari was accused of money laundering and forgery by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). It was revealed that his company Purti Group had given loans to several companies who had invested in this company. Further investigations indicated money laundering.
  • In 2014, Gadkari announced an end on the ban of e-rickshaws as public transport. The media pointed out that his company, Purti Group, was involved in the manufacturing of e-rickshaws; the decision to end the ban would benefit him directly. Later he clarified that none of his companies is involved in the manufacturing of e-rickshaws.
  • In 2014, before the Assembly elections of Maharashtra, a show cause notice was issued to him by the Election Commission. The notice asked him to clarify his remarks given during a rally asking voters to accept bribes given by other parties to lure them but then vote for the party they want to.

  • As the PWD Minister of Maharashtra, he supported and encouraged privatization in infrastructure by private companies. It resulted in increasing the road connectivity in Maharashtra to 98% and resulted in 13,736 villages to be interconnected.
  • In the year 2000, the Union government set up the National Rural Road Development Committee and had appointed Gadkari as the chairman. His reports led to the launch of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana; which aims to build all-weather roads across India and connecting all rural and unconnected village of India.
  • He is popularly known as the Flyover man as he built 55 flyovers across Mumbai; which helped solve the traffic problem of Mumbai.
  • Gadkari played a crucial part in the building of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway; India’s first six-lane concrete expressway.
  • As the Minister of Road Transport & Highways, he increased the creation of roads from 2 km/day in 2014 to 30 km/day by the end of 2018.
