Rajni Bala (1987-2022) was an Indian government school teacher. She was shot dead in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 31 May 2022.

Rajni Bala was born in 1987 (age 38 years; as of 2022). She was from the Samba district in Jammu and Kashmir and held a B.Ed degree.

Husband & Children

Rajni was the wife of Raj Kumar who was also a government school teacher. The couple has a daughter named Sana who is thirteen years old.

Career

After completing her education, Rajni was appointed as a government school teacher in J&K. She and her husband were posted in two different schools in Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir in 2009. Since 2017, she had been working at the Government High School in Gopal Pora. However,  the area of her posting was unsafe, and Rajni, along with her husband, requested many times to the authorities to transfer them to a safer region.

Death

On 31 May 2022, Rajni went to school with her husband and daughter, who left after dropping her outside the school. Rajni walked towards the main entrance of the school, where she was shot in the head by a terrorist.

This was the seventh targeted terrorist attack on Hindu civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in May 2022. It was Rajni’s last day at the school as their transfer request was accepted on the night preceding the attack. Reporters talked to her husband who was devastated. He said,

Had the administration transferred her to a safer place earlier, she might have been alive by now. I curse my destiny. Just a day after her transfer, she was killed by terrorists.’

  • After this terrorist attack, protests were held by various Hindu civilians in Jammu and Kashmir who demanded to be shifted to a safer location.
  • Jammu and Kashmir schools decided to pay a tribute to Rajni and observed two minutes of silence across the valley.
