Alka Nath was born on 24 November 1950 (age 68; as in 2018) in Amritsar, Punjab, India. She did her Bachelor of Arts from Sacred Heart College, Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh. Before making entry into politics, she was a social worker. She is a very private person and does not like politics much, despite being an MP. 

Family, Husband & Caste

Alka Kamal Nath was born into a Hindu Family in Amritsar, India to P.C. Paul (father). No details are known regarding her mother. 

On 27 January 1973, Alka married Kamal Nath, the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, India. The couple has two sons, elder son – Nakul Nath (associated with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs) and younger son – Bakul Nath. The Nath’s family is the owner of 23 companies in India. If sources are to be believed, Alka and Kamal Nath hardly talk to each other. Moreover, during the 1996 elections, they even travelled in separate cars. It was the BJP leader Chandrabhan Chaudhary, who threw light on this fact and was quoted saying, “The husband and wife have come together only to fool you all into voting for her, you know that they are hardly on speaking terms.”

Career

Alka Nath is well-known for her humanitarian works. She is also an artist. In 1996, Alka Nath’s husband Kamal Nath was charge-sheeted in the Jain Hawala case and was denied the party ticket. In order to not lose the parliamentary seat of Congress, Kamal Nath introduced his wife as a dummy candidate. She contested the 11th Lok Sabha elections and was elected the Member of Parliament for Chhindwara constituency of Madhya Pradesh, India. However, she resigned from the post of MP in 1997 after Kamal Nath’s name was cleared from the Jain Hawala case. Following her resignation from the post of MP of Madhya Pradesh, a by-election was held; in which Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won.
