Some Lesser Known Facts About Rashmi Thackeray

  • Rashmi Thackrey is the wife of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray. She is also the editor of the Shiv Sena mouthpiece “Saamana,” (a daily newspaper) and the weekly cartoon magazine ‘Marmik.’
  • Rashmi was born into a middle-class family. Her father used to run a small business of chemical production in Dombivli.
  • After completing her graduation, Rashmi joined Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) in 1987 under its 180 days contract scheme. While working there, she became friends with Jayjaywanti, sister of Raj Thackeray (now president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena). Jayjaywanti introduced her to Uddhav, who was then an avid wildlife photographer and owner of a short-lived advertising agency Chaurang. Rashmi and Uddhav’s friendship deepened quickly and turned into love.
  • After their marriage in 1989, Rashmi and Uddhav left the Thackeray residence, Matoshree, and stayed own their own for two years.
  • During his young days, Uddhav Thackeray was a passionate wildlife photographer who was least interested in politics. Reportedly, it was Rashmi who had encouraged him to enter politics. During the time of Bal Thackeray succession battle between his son Uddhav Thackeray and his nephew Raj Thackeray, Rashmi’s role was considerable in swaying Bal Thackeray to choose Uddhav as his heir over his nephew Raj Thackeray.
  • According to a report in Hindustan Times, Rashmi wanted Uddhav to take over the reins of the state in 1999 if the party returned to power.
  • She is called by the name “Vahinisaheb” by the Shiv Sena workers.
  • Apart from being a backroom player in Maharashtra politics, Rashmi also has several business ventures to her name. According to The Quint, she has a business partnership in three firms and also holds the position of director in “Samved Real Estate Private Limited” and “Sahyog Dealers Private Limited.”
  • In March 2020, Rashmi took the charge as the editor of the Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana and its weekly magazine, Marmik. The decision came after Uddhav had to step down as the editor of Saamana before taking up the post of Maharashtra’s CM.
