Career

Dewald Brevis is a right-hand batsman and leg-break bowler, who has been a part of teams like Mumbai Indians, Northerns Under-13s, and South Africa Under-19s. He was signed by Northerns before the 2021–22 domestic cricket season in South Africa in April 2021. He made his Twenty20 debut for the South Africa Under-19s in the 2021–22 CSA Provincial T20 Knock-Out tournament on 8 October 2021. He scored 46 from 25 balls with a strike rate of 184 including two fours and four sixes. In November 2021, he was included in South Africa’s team for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. He showed exemplary performance in the tournament as he scored two centuries and three half-centuries, two of which were short of 3 and 4 runs from being a century. He racked up a total of 506 runs in six innings beating Shikhar Dhawan’s record of 505 runs in seven innings. He also managed to take seven wickets. Although South Africa could only reach the quarterfinals of the tournament, Brevis was named the Player of the Tournament. He represented the Titans Cubs at the CSA Cubs Week in February 2022 and scored 0, 25, 41*, 58, and 62 having an average of 46.50. The IPL auction started nine days after the last of his World Cup innings. His base price was Rs. 20 lakhs and was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 3 crore.

Before IPL, Brevis played only 8 T20 matches in his career, having 204 runs and 5 wickets to his name. Not being a part of the playing 11 in the first two matches of Mumbai Indians, Brevis made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders on 6 April 2022 in Pune. He scored 29 runs off 19 balls. He took Virat Kohli’s wicket on his first delivery of IPL, after which he slammed 49 runs off 25 balls against Punjab Kings. Brevis made Rahul Chahar bowl the leg spinner’s most expensive over in Chahar’s IPL career of 170 overs by hitting a four before four consecutive sixes making a total of 29 runs in the over. As of April 2022, he maintained a strike rate of 155 in IPL 2022.

Controversy

During a match between RCB and Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022, Brevis dismissed Virat Kohli on his first-ever delivery in IPL and made Virat miss his first fifty of IPL 2022 by mere 2 runs. Dewald bowled a googly, which hit Virat on the pads. The on-field umpire declared him out, after which Virat used DRS which was marked futile. This enraged Kohli, and he expressed his anger by smashing his bat on the ground. This created a buzz in the media and among the fans. Though after the match, Virat met Brevis and said,

Young man. Good one, eh! Good first meeting, get me on the first ball.”

Records

  • Brevis hit the longest six of 112 meters in IPL 2022.
  • Broke Shikhar Dhawan’s world record for the most runs in a single U19 World Cup tournament by scoring 506 runs in the 2022 U19 WC.

AB de Villiers & Baby AB

Having established himself as Baby AB, Brevis has always been a fan of AB de Villiers. Brevis resembles AB de Villiers not just in terms of looks but also in his playing stance and gameplay. In an interview, Brevis revealed,

AB de Villiers has always been one of my role-models; from a young age, growing up, I [used to] watch him play,”

AB de Villiers once visited Brevis’ school, which also happens to be AB de Villiers’ alma mater. Brevis heard him intently talking about his experiences and little anecdotes. When it was time for AB to leave, Brevis mustered up the courage to ask him for his number and to his surprise, AB gave his number to him. Keeping in mind the passion Brevis had for cricket, AB decided to teach him the tips and tricks of cricket. He also helped Brevis improve his gameplay by having net sessions together. Reportedly, AB even used to go to Brevis’ house for helping him to practice. AB transitioned from being his idol to his mentor. In an interview, Brevis expressed,

I always wore my AB de Villiers shirt that my mother made for me. [I just love] the way he plays. He has a great mindset and he likes to entertain people. From a young age I was the same – I also wanted to entertain and put up a big show whenever I batted.

He added,

AB is someone I look up to and if I can play only 10 per cent like him I’ll be happy. I’d love that.”

Interestingly, Brevis’s SA U19 shirt also displayed the number ‘17’ on his back, which was once the number that De Villiers sported for his ODI debut for the Proteas back in 2005. In an interview, he disclosed,

I met AB for the first time at Affies and we sort of had a relationship since then. I asked him then if I could play with the no.17 [shirt] and he said ‘sure, play with it. That’s perfect”
